سر و صدا در گراند هتل

Whenever I go to Westgate, I stay at the Grand Hotel. In spite of its name, it is not very grand, but it is cheap, clean and comfortable. What is more, I know the manager well, so I never have to go to the trouble of reserving a room.

هر وقت که به وست گیت میروم، در گراند هتل می‌مانم. اما برخلاف عنوانش چندان هم عالی نیست، اما ارزان، تمیز و راحت است. چه چیزی بهتر از این، مدیرش را میشناسم، پس هرگز برای رزرو کردن اتاق به مشکل برنمیخورم.

The fact that I always get the same room never fails to surprise me. It is situated at the far end of the building and overlooks a beautiful bay.

این مساله که همیشه همان اتاق را کرایه میکنم هرگز باعث تعجبم نشده است. اتاق در انتهایی ترین قسمت هتل واقع شده و چشم اندازی به سمت بندری زیبا دارد.

On my last visit, the manager told me that I could have my usual room, but he added apologetically that I might find it a little noisy. So great was the demand for rooms, he told me that the management had decided to build a new wing.

در آخرین بار اقامتم در آن هتل، مدیر به من گفت که میتوانم اتاق همیشگی‌ام را داشته باشم، اما با عذر خواهی افزود که ممکن است سر و صدا کمی آزارم بدهد. مدیر چنین گفت که تقاضا برای اتاق‌های هتل به قدری زیاد شده است که شروع به ساخت ساختمان جدیدی در کنار هتل کرده است.

I did not mind this at all. It amused me to think that the dear old Grand Hotel was making a determined effort to live up to its name.

این مساله اصلا برایم مهم نبود. با خودم فکر کردم، جالب است که گراند هتل قدیمی‌مان در تلاش‌ است متناسب با نامش، خود را وسعت بخشد.

During the first day I hardly noticed the noise at all. The room was a little dusty but that was to be expected. The following afternoon, I borrowed a book from the hotel library and went upstairs to read. I had no sooner sat down than I heard someone hammering loudly at the wall.

در اولین روز اقامتم در اتاق کمتر صدایی شنیده میشد. اتاق کمی گرد و خاک داشت اما انتظارش را داشتم. بعد از ظهر همان روز کتابی از کتابخانه هتل امانت گرفتم و به طبقه بالا رفتم تا مطالعه‌اش کنم. به محض اینکه نشستم، صدای کسی را شنیدم که با چکش، محکم به دیوار میکوبید.

At first I paid no attention, but after a while I began to feel very uncomfortable. My clothes were slowly being covered with fine white powder.

در ابتدا توجه زیادی به سر و صدا نداشتم، اما بعد از مدتی کوتاه احساس بی‌قراری کردم. لباس‌هایم از گرد و خاک، کم کم سفید پوش میشد.

Soon there was so much dust in the room that I began to cough. The hammering was now louder than ever and bits of plaster were coming away from the walls.

خیلی زود تمام اتاق را گرد و خاک فرا گرفت و باعث شد شروع به سرفه کنم. حالا صدای کوبیده شدن چکش بیشتر از قبل شده بود و تکه‌هایی از دیوار، کنده شده و به زمین می‌افتادند.

It looked as though the whole building was going to fall. I went downstairs immediately to complain to the manager. We both returned to the room but everything was very quiet. As we stood there looking at each other.

به نظر میرسید تمام ساختمان فرود خواهد ریخت. سریعا از پله‌ها پایین رفتم تا مراتب شکایت خود را به مدیر اعلام کنم. هر دو به اتاق بازگشتیم اما همه چیز آرام بود. همانطور که خشکم زده بود به مدیر نگاه کردم و او هم به من خیره شد.

I felt rather ashamed of myself for of a sudden, the hammering began again and a large brick landed on the floor. Looking up, we saw that a sharp metal tool had forced its way through the wall, making a very large hole right above my bed.

تقریبا از خودم شرمنده شده بودم که صدای چکش بار دیگر آغاز شد و به دنبالش آجری بزرگ به روی زمین افتاد. وقتی که به بالا نگاه کردم، یک ابزار برش فلزی را دیدم که راه خود را از میان سقف به داخل اتاق باز کرده و سوراخ بزرگی را ایجاد کرده بود.
