The Study Of Language - part 1

Conceptual & Associative Meaning: The conceptual meaning is the dictionary concept of a word, for example "needle" means a harp pointed thin instrument made of steel.

But the associative meaning is the connotative meaning which is being associated with your past memories of a word. for example "needle" can be associated with pain blood, hospital, ... for different people.

Synonymy: It refers to two or more words which can be use in the same concept, but they're not necessorily exactly of the same meaning. for example answer, reply, response, ...

Antonymy: It refers to the words of opposit meanings, for example black ‡ White (direct opposition)

Antonymy can be divided in to 3 types:

1- Gradable: The adjectives or adverbs wich can be compered. For example: big & small

2- non-gradable: The adjectives or adverbs which are not comperable dead ‡ alive

3- Reversive: Those antonyms which are being associated with each other. For example: exist ‡ enter, pack ‡ unpack

Hyponymy: It's the relationship between the words which are related in meaning, For example animal and dog make the hyponym relationship.

The word at the higher level is called super- ordinate, and the word which the examples of super- ordinate at the same level are called co-hyponym.

animal→super ordinate

dog, cat, horse→ co-hyponyms
