Animal Agriculture and the Facts
In 2006, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had estimated that raising animals for meat and dairy was responsible for 18% of global warming; more than all of the world’s transportation put together. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to scientists that the livestock industry is playing a more significant role. Dr. Rajendra Pachauri Chair of United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: I’ve received a number of emails from people that I respect saying that the 18% figure is an underestimate; it’s a low estimate and in actual fact it’s much higher. Dr.T.Colin Campbell Renowned nutrition researcher, Cornell University, USA: "I just had some information just recently, that the new figures now indicate that at least half of the greenhouse gases that are up there now not that 15 or 20%, at least half and maybe considerably more are due to livestock production." Greenhouse gasses are emitted during virtually every step of the meat producing process, including the three major greenhouse gasses: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, & methane . However, what is unaccounted for is the fact that instead of the 23 times figure used in most reports, including that of the United Nations, methane is actually 72-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period. Professor Barry Brook University of Adelaide, Australia Director of the Research Institute for Climate Change and Sustainability: "If you look at these reports they will suggest it (methane) has about 25 times the impact of CO2. But really when it’s up there in the atmosphere doing its work, it’s 72 times the impact and that makes a big difference." Noam Mohr Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA: "Methane is trapping in just 12 years, 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide does in a century. If you look in a shorter time scale, and say how much warming over the next 20 years is this quantity of carbon dioxide going to cause versus this quantity of methane? Then the methane causes 72 times as much warming as the carbon dioxide over 20 years. At 37% of global methane emissions, livestock is the single largest source of human-caused methane." Dr. Kirk Smith Professor, University of California Berkeley, USA: "Sure we have to deal with CO2 in the long run, but if you want to make an impact on climate in the next 20 years, the place to do it is with the shorter-lived greenhouse gases, most important of which is methane. So, of the emissions in the next 20 years, the CO2 in this year emissions will only be about 40% of the total warming. The other 60% or more will be from the shorter-lived gases, most important of which is methane." Livestock has an even larger share of emissions when yet another unaccounted factor is acknowledged: aerosols , or particles released along with CO2 from burning fossil fuels that, despite their detrimental health aspects, actually have a cooling effect. Noam Mohr: "So when you burn these fossil fuels, you get carbon dioxide which heats the planet, and aerosols which cool the planet. And the net effect, if you calculate them out, comes out to about zero, they roughly cancel each other out. So the warming we’ve been seeing and are likely to see in the near future is dominated by other sources, the main one of which is methane." We have a critical environmental crisis now happening with effects that were seeing around the world, and if we want to address the warming were seeing now the best bang for our buck comes in addressing the other gases; mostly methane...and its number 1 source, animal agriculture. Because meat producing causes 80% of global warming, because of related pollution from various angles; transportation, water, deforestation, refrigeration, medical care for animals and humans... all kinds of pollution coming from meat production. It’s not just the land that they use. It’s not just the methane gas and nitrous oxide that they produce, it is all its by-products; there’s no end to the list. We cannot rely on green technology alone to save the planet. Because the worst cause of it is from the meat industry.

در سال 2006 سازمان خواروبار جهانی (فائو) وابسته به سازمان ملل تخمین زد که پرورش دامها برای گوشت و مواد لبنی مسئول 18% گرمایش جهانی است که بیشتر از کل مجموع وسایل حمل و نقل دنیاست. ولی اکنون بیشتر برای دانشمندان آشکار مي‌شود که صنعت دامداری نقش عمده تری دارد. دکتر راجندرا پاچورا ریاست تغییرات آب و هوایی میان دولتی سازمان ملل: "من از افرادی که آنها را بسیار قبول دارم، ایمیل هایی دریافت کرده ام که 18% تخمین بسیار کمی است و رقم حقیقی بسیار بالاتر است." دکتر تی. کالین کمپبل محقق تغذیه از دانشگاه کرنل، ایالات متحده امریکا: " اخیراً اطلاعات جدیدی کسب کرده ام که تحقیقات جدید نشان می دهند که حداقل نیمی از گازهای گلخانه ای، نه 15یا 20 درصد، بلکه حداقل نیمی از گازها و شاید هم بیشتر، به دلیل پرورش احشام مي‌باشد." گازهای گلخانه ای که در هر مرحله گوشت تولید مي‌شوند، شامل سه گاز گلخانه ای عمده مي‌باشند؛ دی اکسید کربن، اکسید نیتروژن و متان. ولی چیزی که حساب نشده، این حقیقت است که متان در یک دوره 20 ساله آنطور که در اکثر گزارشات از جمله گزارش فائو منتشر شده است 27 برابر قویتر از دی اکسید کربن نیست، بلکه 72 تا 100 برابر قویتر است. پروفسور بری بروک از دانشگاه آدلاید، استرالیا، مدیر موسسه تحقیقات تغییر آب و هوا و توسعه پایدار: " اگر شما به این گزارشات نگاه کنید، در آنها نوشته متان حدود 25 برابر از دی اکسید کربن قویتر است. ولی وقتی متان در اتمسفر بوده و در حال تـأثیرگذاری باشد، 72 برابر تأثیرمی گذارد و این تفاوت بسیار فاحشی است." نوام مهر، فیزیکدان از موسسه پلی تکنیک دانشگاه نیویورک در ایالات متحده امریکا: "متان در طی 12 سال، 25 برابر بیشتر گرما در اتمسفر حبس مي‌کند که دی اکسید کربن در یک قرن حبس مي‌کند. اگر یک دوره کوتاهتر را در نظر بگیریم و بگوییم در عرض 20 سال آینده، یک مقدار مشخصی از دی اکسید کربن و همان مقدار از متان، کدام بیشتر گرمایش تولید مي‌کند؛ آن وقت متان 72 برابر گرمایش بیشتر از دی اکسید کربن در عرض 20 سال موجب مي‌شود. صنعت دامداری 37% از کل انتشار متان در دنیا را موجب مي‌شود که بزرگترین عامل منفرد تولید متان ساخته ی بشر است." دکتر کرک اسمیت استاد دانشگاه برکلی کالیفرنیا، ایالات متحده آمریکا: "ما باید به دی اکسید کربن در طولانی مدت نگاه کنیم ولی اگر بخواهیم در 20 سال آینده اثری بر آب و هوا بگذاریم، باید به سراغ گازهای گلخانه ای کم عمرتر برویم که مهمترین آنها متان است. پس در آلایندگی های 20 سال آینده، دی اکسید کربن امسال تنها 40% از کل گرمایش جهانی را دارا خواهد بود. 60% باقی مانده یا بیشتر از آن از گازهای کم عمرتر هستند که متان مهمترین آنهاست." دامداری نقش عمده تری در آلایندگی ها دارد. وقتی این موضوع را هم در نظر بگیریم؛ "اورسل " یا ذراتی که با دی اکسید کربن از سوختهای فسیلی آزاد مي‌شوند، با اینکه در زمینه سلامتی بسیار مضر هستند، ولی در حقیقت اثر خنک کننده دارد. نوام مهر: "وقتی سوختهای فسیلی بسوزانیم دی اکسید کربن حاصل مي‌شود که سیاره را گرم مي‌کند و اورسل آزاد مي‌شود، که زمین را سرد مي‌کند. پس تاثیر گرمایش هر دوی آنها را اگر حساب کنیم حدود صفر مي‌شود، آنها تقریباً همدیگر را خنثی مي‌کنند. بنابراین گرمایشی که اکنون شاهد آن بوده ایم و احتمالاٌ در آینده نزدیک نیز شاهد آن خواهیم بود، بخاطر منابع دیگری است که اصلی ترین آنها متان است." ما اکنون با بحران آب و هوایی خطرناکی مواجه هستیم که آن را در سراسر دنیا می بینیم و اگر بخواهیم به گرمایشی که اکنون داریم رسیدگی کنیم، بهترین راه این است که به سایر گازها مخصوصاً گاز متان و منبع شماره 1 آن که دامداری مي‌باشد، رسیدگی کنیم... زیرا گوشت مسبب 80% از گرمایش جهانی است. به دلیل آلودگی که مربوط به جنبه های گوناگون مي‌شود؛ حمل و نقل، آب، قطع درختان، جنگل زدایی، نگهداری گوشت در یخچال، مراقبت های پزشکی حیوانات و انسانها و .... همه این آلودگیها ناشی از تولید گوشت است. تنها به خاطر زمینی که آنها استفاده مي‌کنند، نیست. تنها تولید گاز متان و اکسید نیتروژن نیست که آنها تولید می کنند، بلکه تمام فراورده های جانبی آن هم هست. پایانی برای این فهرست وجود ندارد. ما نمی توانیم برای نجات کره زمین تنها به تکنولوژی سبز تکیه کنیم. زیرا بدترین مسبب آن صنعت گوشت است.
