20. What is the "maximal onset principal"? Give example and explain?
This is a principle that states where two syllables are to be divided, any consonants between them should be attached to the right hand syllable not the left, as far as possible.

21. Divide the following words into appropriate syllables and explain which principals have you followed?
/mɔːnɪŋ/ the maximal onset principal m ɔː. nɪŋ
/bete/ the maximal onset principal tell us to allow a consonant to be assigned to the left-hand syllable bet. ə

22. Why the following syllable divisions are not accepted?
/e.kstre/ because of its impossible onset
/ekstr.e// because of its impossible coda

23.What is "ambisyllabic"?
When one consonant stands between vowels and it is difficult to assign the consonant to one syllable or the other we would say that the consonant belongs to both syllables the term used by phonologists for a consonant in this situation is ambisyllabic.
