In the number of speakers who learn it as a first or second language, and in its range of uses and adaptability to general and specific tasks, English is the world’s most important language today. It is the mother tongue of several hundred million people. Its rich verbal art, great works in science and scholarship, and major role in international commerce and culture have made English the most frequently taught second language in the world.
English is not the first language of as many individuals as Mandarin Chinese. But it is spoken over a much vaster area. In North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and elsewhere, it is the official language of many nations, including somewhere English is not most people’s first language.
A history of political importance as well as a certain linguistic suppleness have endowed English with an enormous vocabulary. Webster’s Third New International Dictionary contains 460,000 words, and these do not include the many technical terms that appear only in specialized dictionaries for particular fields, or recent neologisms (new words), not to mention all the regular plural forms of nouns, the different present and past tense forms of verbs, and other words derived from these words.
 
انگلیسی از نظر متکلمانی که آن را به عنوان زبان اول و یا دوم می آموزند، و از لحاظ گستره کاربردها و قابلیت انطباق با امور عمومی و تخصصی، مهمترین زبان جهان امروز است. زبان انگلیسی زبان مادری چند صد میلیون نفر است. هنر کلامی غنی آن، آثار فراوان آن در زمینة علم و دانش، و نقش اصلی آن در فرهنگ و تجارت بین¬المللی سبب شده است که این زبان رایج ترین زبان دوم تدریس شده در جهان باشد.
انگلیسی، از لحاظ تعداد متکلم در مقایسه با زبان ماندارین چینی زبان اول نیست. اما در مناطق بیشتری تکلم می گردد. در آمریکای شمالی، اروپا، آسیا، آفریقا و جاهای دیگر که انگلیسی زبان اول اکثر افراد نیست، این زبان به عنوان زبان رسمی بسیاری از کشورها می¬باشد.
تاریخچه اهمیت سیاسی و همچنین انعطاف پذیری زبان شناسی خاص، زبان انگلیسی را، دارای دایره لغات عظیمی کرده است. چاپ سوم فرهنگ لغت بین المللی جدید وبستر دارای 000/460 کلمه می‏باشد که بسیاری از اصطلاحات فنی که فقط در فرهنگ¬های لغت تخصصی در رشته های خاص وجود دارند یا کلمات جدید را دربر نمی گیرد، به علاوه تمام شکل¬های جمع با قاعده، شکل-های مختلف زمان حال و گذشته افعال و سایر کلماتی که از این کلمات مشتق می¬شوند نیز در این فرهنگ لغت ذکر نشده است.
