There are many different types of dictionaries. The smallest is the pocket or abridged dictionary, usually a paperback, which gives short definitions. The most complete kind is the unabridged dictionary, which includes many unusual words, extensive definitions, and full word histories. You may have seen an unabridged dictionary on a stand in the library.
Between these two sizes is the college- level dictionary, which includes enough detail for most college students. Because a dictionary conveys much information in a small space, learning to use this important tool takes practice. A skillful dictionary user can find not only the meaning of a word but also its pronunciation, its history, and other words related to it.
dictionary definitions usually state only the precise, or denotative, meanings of words. But words also have implied, or connotative meanings, which are suggested by the images, ideas, and emotions that we associate with them. For example, the words skinny and slender have the same denotative meaning, “thin” , but they differ in connotative meaning.  

انواع مختلفی از فرهنگ لغت موجود است. کوچک ترین آن فرهنگ لغت جیبی یا خلاصه شده است که معمولاً به صورت جلد نازک (شومیز) می باشد و تعاریف را به صورت مختصر شده ارائه می¬دهد. کامل ترین نوع آن فرهنگ لغت کامل (خلاصه نشده) است که شامل بسیاری از لغات غیرمعمول، تعاریف جامع و تاریخچه کامل لغت می باشد. شاید یک فرهنگ لغت کامل را بر روی پیشخوان کتابخانه دیده باشید.
بین این دو اندازه، فرهنگ لغت سطح دانشگاهی است که شامل جزئیات کافی برای اکثر دانشجویان است. به دلیل این که فرهنگ لغت اطلاعات بسیاری را در یک فضای کوچک انتقال می دهد، یادگیری استفاده از آن ابزار مهم، مستلزم تمرین کردن است. یک کاربر ماهر فرهنگ لغت قادر است نه تنها معنای یک کلمه را بلکه تلفظ آن، تاریخچه آن و بقیة کلمات مرتبط با آن را نیز پیدا کند.
تعاریف فرهنگ لغت معمولاً فقط معانی دقیق و صریح کلمات را بیان می کنند. اما کلمات هم چنین دارای معانی ضمنی یا تلویحی نیز هستند که بر اساس تصورات، عقاید و احساساتی که ما به آن¬ها ارتباط می دهیم ارائه می شوند. به طور مثال کلمات skinny و slender هر دو دارای معنای صریح مشابهی هستند: (لاغر)، اما در معانی ضمنی باهم متفاوتند.
